KETO-DIET: SIDE EFFECTS

Keto-diet is one of the most followed diets around the globe. It is the form of low-carb diet that is based on the concept of deriving most of the calories from protein and fats instead of carbohydrates. Major calories are derived from the carbohydrates that are readily available for digestion in the human body, when carbohydrates are not available, the energy is derived from other sources like fats and protein thereby entering the mode of ketosis. Keto-diet is conceptualised around the process of ketosis, hence its name. The energy derived from fats and proteins is taken from the ketone bodies that the body produces in absence of carbohydrates for fuelling up of the normal metabolic processes. Ketosis is believed to make one, less hungrier than the normal diet.

Although Keto-diet is the major trend and popular among major fitness enthusiasts, it recently lead to death of a famous Indian actress, where the organ failure was reported to be manifested from following a keto-diet, probably followed incorrectly. That being extreme and rare case, there are side effects of keto-diet that are less talked about and one should know. Keto-diet is beneficial in many prospects but it is important to read through and consult a doctor before following any regimen.

Side Effects:

  • Headache, brain-fog, fatigue, irritability, nausea and cramps known as keto-flu are universal side effects that are observed while following the diet.
  • Keto-diet has reported to cause insomnia.
  • It can lead to fatty-liver disease as there is sudden increase in consumption of fat and fact that the disease has a genetic variable associated with it.
  • Where as it clears out skin problems for many, for others it causes skin related problems like sudden break out of acne.
  • Keto-diet could also cause nutrient in-deficiency, low-blood pressure.
  • It is not recommended at all for conditions involving gall-bladder, thyroid and pancreas.
  • Keto-diet leads to loss of electrolytes and serious dehydration.
  • Keto-diet leads to kidney stones and kidney failures in many of the followers.
  • It may lead to hypoglycaemia, which in turn could lead a person to coma.
  • Keto-diet is associated with impaired bone health.

Many diets and patterns vary from person to person, underlaying diseased conditions, body muscle mass, genetics etc. It is important to rule out the negatives and weigh the pros and cons and follow a proper diet plan under the supervision of registered medical practitioner or a specialised dietician.
