Kadha: The herbal concoction and its side effects

Boosting immunity and the practise of consuming immune boosters as daily routine is the new trend that we have started adapting amidst the corona virus pandemic. It is the recent trending hashtag and people of every age group are adamantly following it which in practise has implications, good and bad. We inhabit the part of globe where in homemade remedies and “nani ke nuske” work wonders and this goes not just by placebo effect but has scientific back-up like in case of Turmeric having health benefits or Tulsi being an immune-modulator.

Rigorous usage of resources cause over exploitation, as goes the saying excess of everything is bad. The psychologic effect of risks and possibilities of being infected by the virus is having deeper impact than the infection itself.

In such times, a new concoction of herbal elements is making noise, this is popular known among the masses as Kadha.

What is Kadha?

It is a home remedy that contains herbs and spices and is believed to ward of infections and boost immunity. These spices and herbs include tulsi, turmeric, black pepper, bay leaf, cinnamon, giloy etc.  The concoction is prepared by extraction of active elements from the ingredients by actively boiling it for prolonged period of time and filtrate hence obtained is used as Kadha.

What are the side effects of Kadha?

The effects of herbal remedies vary person to person depending upon the age, concentration of elements, genetics, use of other drugs parallely. Excessive intake of Kadha in pursuit of hyper exaggerating immunity as believed by people can lead to multiple harmful effects on the body as it speeds up the immune reactions; few of which are listed below:

  • The excessive intake may lead to mouth ulcers, improper urination and acidity.
  • The elements which are part of Kadha if exploited could generate excessive heat inside the body, raise the temperature and may lead to breakout of acne and nose bleeding.
  • Using tulsi leaves more than required could cause staining in teeth, it may interfere with the blood thinning medications, impact fertility and isn’t recommended to be consumed in pregnancy.
  • Over-usage of black-pepper can cause gastro intestinal disturbances and also cause burning sensations in the gut.
  • Side effects of using too much cinnamon include liver damage, hypoglycaemia, breathing problems and might well as interact with certain the medications.
  • Giloy, it is believed to make the immune system function hyper-actively upon excessive usage and leads to the presentation auto-immune diseases.
