A transplant success rate is directly dependent on multiple factors, one of the factors being time between harvesting of organs and transplant. The more the delay between the two the more is the probability of harvested organ to loose its viability. This time hence is decided by the transportation and distance, both playing a critical role. To ease and fasten the process and hence reduce the delay few routes have been created across the country which are termed as “Green Corridors”.
Green Corridors are the social routes created for transportation of harvested organs to the recipient hospital, wherein the ambulance is given special clearance to facilitate the fastest possible delivery. All the traffic signals falling between the whole route are controlled manually and turned green. This process of creating a green corridor, facilitating the clearance and creating possibilities of delivering the organs to the recipient hospital involves role of multiple stakeholders involving state police authorities, hospital authorities, CISF and at certain times airport authorities too.
This whole process is coordinated by NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization), which is a central authority set up under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. NOTTO has various state and regional centres which are involved in the process at pocket levels to carry the whole process.
Whenever a patient is declared brain dead and his/her family consents for organ donation the requirements of recipient is checked across the city, within the state and then within other states.
In India the Green Corridor was adapted first in 2014 by Chennai, where in life of 21 year old was saved by creating a green corridor from Chennai Government General Hospital to Fortis Malhar Hospitals in Adyar covering a distance of 12 Kms in 14 minutes.
City like Pune has seen a consistent growth in number of green corridors and has reported to create more than 100 green corridors for the transportation of organs in past 4 years.
Amid Covid -19 on August 16, green corridor was created between Pune and Hyderabad for Lung transplant within one hour.
