Technology is used by us in various aspects of our lives to attain various tasks. It holds importance in our professional life, family life, academic life and also personal life. Technology can be explained as processes and products dedicated to clarify and simplify our lives. Technology is always expanding and morphing, as each new technology enters our life, it has the capacity to improve our lives but in some cases it can negatively have an impact on emotional and mental wellbeing.

Lets have a look at the positive and negative effects of technology:

Positive Effects

Communication: Thanks to technology, today we can make communication all over the world via text messaging, video calling, audio calling. There are a plethora of devices like computers, laptops and mobile which help us to do so.

Education: It’s been proven by several studies that students having better access to technology have more ways to gain knowledge and excel in their fields. It is undebatable that internet is vital when it comes to supplemental studies and research for students at every level.

Medication: Technology has been a great contributor to the medical field, the invention of new machines, medicines, surgical instruments have paved way to having a better life. As the hospital staff is better equipped with knowledge of latest technology they are more organised and efficient in saving people’s life.

Research: Invention of new ideas, tools and processes have become easier now, as they are backed up with new technological advancements. It has helped us in reaching the priority and have faster process.

Trade and Industry: Our accounting, information, point of sale, management systems have been boosted by the use of technology. Even calculator is a technology product. Today, the business communication is a lot easier with the help of technology.

Negative Effects:

Threat to Human Health: Nowadays people are spending more time looking at their computer screen than exercising and being active. This can result in unhealthy food consumption, depression and obesity. Along with this there is great likelihood of eyesight and hearing loss.

Addiction: Along with being dependent on technology we have also become addicted to it. Studies have shown that people felt the vibration of the phone even when it was taken away from them, these are some of the withdrawal symptoms that we expect from drug consumption.

Lack of Privacy: This problem is estimated to get worse with further development of technology as people are getting accustomed to sharing most of their personal information on the internet or other social media sites.

Negative effects on Kids: Technology appears to affect the health of teenagers and children. Like adults, children who spend a lot of time on digital devices  may  have eye strain. Recent studies have shown a link between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and digital media use. It is required that parents and caregivers should designate media free time in a day.

Having knowledge about the upside and downside of technology will help us to make best use of it and minimise the negative effects.
